Ankle Brachial Index

The Ankle Brachial Index vascular assessment is a measure of the capacity of the arteries of the lower limb to supply sufficient blood (and the nutrients it carries) to the tissues. The ABI compares the blood pressure reading taken in your arm, to the blood pressure reading of your ankles. The index of these two numbers gives a vital insight into the true health of the legs and feet. A lower ABI is suggestive of impaired circulation.

An ABI is commonly recommended for people showing symptoms that could be attributed to decreased blood flow. Particularly those that suffer from diabetes, are long term smokers or have reduced sensation in the periphery.

A reduced ABI suggests that the tissue in your feet and legs may have compromised integrity and reduced healing capacity.
